SkyRadio is an installation of sculptural artefacts, with the inclusion of hand-built electronic speakers within walls of ceramics; acting as amplifiers of sound.
The audio, includes sound collected in remote Enontekiö (Lapland), and relates to place. Exploring the idea of silence, while the earth is blanketed in snow, i used a ELF (extremely low frequency) receiver, used for listening for naturally occuring (electronic) Sferics (atmospherics), such as northern lights, and lightning. The receiver captures the low frequency waves generate in the earths ionosphere, and translates them into audible whistles, teaks, pops. Natural radio; alongside naturally occurring patterns made through mixing different clay bodies, explore the idea of the earth ‘talking’ of itself through form; literally clay in volcanic areas contains more iron; affecting the colour of the clay itself.
This process attempts to ground natural phenomena.
